Good luck and I hope you recover your data If you are a tech, then you probably know that hard drive failures are inevitable. Chances are that sooner or later it will happen to someone you support or possibly even you. The good news is that there are lots of great recovery tools and methods out there and I would like to share them with you. Please take this as a reminder to start a proper back up routine. You may want to buy an external hard drive to make it easier, and they are handy to carry with you. Step 1 Connect the Hard Drive to Another Computer. USB to IDE SATA hard drive connector. Before you can do any work on the crashed drive you will need to remove it from the current machine unless it is an external drive that has crashed and connect it to another machine as a secondary drive. The best way to do this is to buy and use a USB to IDESATA adapter. This is the cheapest multi functional USB 3 option and I prefer USB 3 because it is a lot faster. If you dont have one available then you may be able to connect the drive to another desktop computer internally as a secondary drive, though this means pulling apart another computer to install the crashed drive. If you do, make sure that the machine detects the drive in the BIOS or you wont be able to access it once the computer starts up. Step 2 Try to Copy the Data to Another Drive. After you connect the drive to another computer either internally or with the USB adapter, check to see if you can browse the contents of the drive. It is worth trying because maybe it wasnt the drive itself that actually crashed. If you can, try to copy data off that you would like to recover. This might not work if you are trying to recover data from a dead hard drive but there is a chance that only the operating system is corrupt and the user data is still fine. Step 3 Download and Try Data Recovery Software. If you cant manually copy the user data off then you can try to recover it using data recovery software. Whatever you do, do not write anything to the drive that you are trying to recover data from. This means you should not install the recovery software onto the drive that you are trying to recover data from. Doing so could actually overwrite files that are still hidden there and that you can still restore. PC Hard Drive Recovery Option 1 Recuva. Recuva software for hard disk recovery. Will My Patient Recover from Acute Renal FailureAcute kidney injury AKI is commonly encountered in critically ill patients and appears to exert an important modifying effect on mortality and health resource utilization. The recent introduction of novel consensus definitions 4, 5 has shown AKI can occur in 2. A significant number of these patients with milder forms of AKI will develop severe AKI supported by renal replacement therapy RRT. Observational data have shown approximately 5 to 7 of all critically ill patients receive RRT and its utilization may be rising. Despite improvements in critical care support e. AKI still constitutes a significant independent predictor of mortality, morbidity and health costs. Severe AKI is associated with mortality rates consistently exceeding 5. Perhaps just as importantly, those surviving their episode of critical illness may not recover kidney function. These patients may be left with only partial recovery and experience accelerated risk of progression to end stage kidney disease ESKD3 or remain dialysis dependent upon discharge. Function that is not recovered may have unfavorable long term health effects, such as poor quality of life1. Increasingly, outcomes based research is focusing on the long term implications of survival after critical illness,1. This patient centered shift is increasingly focused on quality adjusted survival and functional recovery following discharge from the intensive care unit ICU. Recovery of kidney function is an underappreciated, but fundamental long term outcome for survivors of critical illness. Non recovery likely portends considerable downstream morbidity, including incident RRT, re hospitalizations, and poor quality of life,1. Moreover, observational data extrapolated from the ESKD population have found chronic dialysis therapy to be associated with lower quality of life and higher morbidity when compared to the general population. Accordingly, ICU clinicians should routinely be considering the long term implications of ICU support for survivors of critical illness1. Definition. Analogous to prior literature describing the epidemiology of AKI, there has been no universally accepted definition for kidney recovery following an episode of AKI. The majority of studies have simply described recovery as liberation from dialysis. While clearly having resource implications, this definition is too simplistic and likely inadequate. Such a definition would neglect those patients who achieve only partial recovery, defined as a persistently elevated serum creatinine s. Cr above a known pre morbid baseline value, yet who clearly have progressed to detectable forms of chronic kidney disease CKD. The Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative ADQI Working Group proposed an operational definition for classification of kidney recovery associated with AKI based largely on persisting changes to s. Cr or ongoing need for RRT4 see Table 1. A minimum follow up period of 9. AKI. 4 Whether this is the most stable metric remains uncertain. However, for those survivors still receiving dialysis at 9. These patients may have had premorbid factors that predisposed to AKI andor rapid remodeling of renal architecture. The challenge is developing an acceptable definition and timeframe for determining partial recovery. At some point, these patients will transition between a state of recovering to being classified as having CKD, ideally staged by the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative KDOQI definition of detectable kidney damage or a glomerular filtration rate lt 6. Lmin1. 7. 3 m. 2 for 9. Longitudinal studies whereby patients with partial recovery receive serial evaluations of kidney function are needed to better understand the natural history of this subpopulation and any factors that may modify their disease course. Epidemiology. The epidemiology of kidney recovery across studies has been inconsistent. This is a consequence of variable case mix and baseline risk, differing kidney recovery definitions and time for ascertainment, and the competing nature of mortality and non recovery in long term outcome studies. Among the studies focused on critically ill patients with severe AKI, most patients would appear to completely recover function. However, the rates of dialysis dependence at hospital discharge and at 9. In a retrospective cohort study of 3,3. CKD patients with severe AKI complicating major surgery, complete, partial and non recovery status defined by RIFLE classification risk, injury, failure, loss, end stage kidney disease were seen in 5. In another cohort study, Schiffl and Fischer evaluated 4. CKD patients with severe AKI supported by RRT. This study found that 5. Cr, 1. 33 mgd. L and 1. Cr, 36 mgd. L. At five years, kidney function was normal in 8. The long term risk of ESKD also was evaluated by Wald et al in a matched cohort of 3,7. AKI who received RRT and survived free of dialysis for at least 3. After a median follow up of three years, the incidence of chronic dialysis was three fold higher in cases compared with matched controls adjusted hazard ratio, 3. Risk identification. Numerous studies have identified factors that may be associated with or predictive of kidney recovery after an episode of severe AKI. Non modifiable factors have included advancing patient age,3. Perhaps the most important pre existing factor is CKD. These may represent surrogates for diminished physiologic reserve to the acute stress of critical illness and AKI. The prevalence of CKD among critically ill patients with AKI is approximately 3. Although the hospital mortality for those with acute on chronic kidney disorders may be lower compared to those without CKD, CKD patients are more likely to remain dialysis dependent. In fact, data have suggested a biologic gradient between severity of CKD and risk of progression to ESKD, with lower pre morbid function more predictive of non recovery and dialysis dependence. Observational data also have found a higher likelihood of recovery to dialysis independence for patients with severe sepsisseptic shock as a primary contributing factor for AKI. However, it is also increasingly apparent that the AKI associated with critical illness is not isolated and is more likely to occur in the context of multi organ dysfunction. Moreover, critically ill patients, by virtue of the complexity of their acute illness, are increasingly confronted with the potential for multiple hits to the kidney. These may stem from, but are by no means limited to Having undergone complex surgical procedures e. Use of complex organ support devices e. Exposure to various nephrotoxins e. Need for contrast enhanced imaging Development of intra abdominal hypertension. Such repeated kidney insults certainly will propagate AKI and contribute to delay in recovery andor be associated with chronic maladaptive changes, if persistent. This is supported by observations that overall severity of AKI measured either by peak s. Cr andor need for RRT, coupled with duration of injury is associated with higher likelihood of non recovery and progressive CKD. Risk Modification. Although patients at risk for kidney non recovery can be identified, it is uncertain whether this outcome can be modified beyond the logical measures e.
